Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an exciting set of technology tools used in almost every field imaginable. Knowledge of GIS and experience with spatial analysis will enhance your resume and allow you to analyze and manage your data more effectively than ever before. Gain an overview of GIS in this hands-on workshop. Learn about terms and concepts, available systems, data sources and design and policy decisions that must be addressed prior to implementation of a GIS project. By combining lectures and hands-on experience working with ArcGIS, this course will provide you with a basic working knowledge of GIS and a concrete sense of the planning and design work involved in using GIS.

Section Notes

This is an online, remote learning course, which consists of 20 hours of content and curriculum that is taught with pre-recorded lectures as well all mandatory live Zoom session with the instructor(s). Pre-recorded lectures and live sessions are accessed via our Canvas learning system and Zoom. This course is the same length as a standard 3 day, in-person course, please be sure to plan your schedule accordingly. 

This course is open July 8 – July 12, with live sessions on July 9, 10 and 11 from 3:00-5:00 PM PST. 

Attendance of the live sessions is mandatory to receive credit for this course.  

We allow registration through the 12:00 PM PST (noon) on the first day of the course. We cannot extend course access beyond 11:59 PM on last day of class, so students pursuing a late enrollment acknowledge that they will have less time to complete the materials. Please contact the course representative with any questions.

Technical Requirements

Students will be provided with a student license for ArcGIS Pro. Instructions with licensing and installation will be provided prior to the course start. Students will need to use their personal laptop with a minimum of 8GB of RAM and a dual core processor (64 bit) that can run Windows 11. Mac users will need Windows 11 installed either using Boot Camp or virtualization (VirtualBox, Parallels, etc.).
