Vira Danak Bhatt, M.S., is an informatics specialist and member of the Pathology Informatics team at the UC Davis Health System. She has more than six years of experience working in healthcare analytics, is a certified advanced SAS programmer and is the instructor of Introduction to Healthcare Analytics in the Healthcare Analytics Certificate Program.
Why is healthcare analytics important?
Healthcare data analytics provides an opportunity to healthcare organizations to treat patients more holistically and enhance health outcomes. EHRs and digital tools have provided us with much more structured and unstructured data, which can be analyzed using machine learning and analytical tools. Healthcare analytics can be used to eliminate diseases, improve population health and prevent avoidable harm to the patients at point of care.
Why are you passionate about healthcare analytics?
With my academic background in bioinformatics and health informatics, I have always been very passionate about data analytics and presenting data with an intelligent awareness to increase clarity and direction in the respective field. Evaluating healthcare data can prevent medication errors, save patients’ lives and improve quality and cost of healthcare services.
What do you want students to take away from your course?
I want students to feel accomplished and take away the core concepts of healthcare analytics that can help them continue growing in the field.
How would a student describe your teaching style?
My teaching style is interaction based. There are students from all different industrial and academic backgrounds in the courses, so I prefer providing a platform were students from different backgrounds feel comfortable and have an opportunity to grow and share their knowledge through interactive discussion sessions
