UC Davis Maternal and Child Nutrition Program Has Unique Dual Focus

The UC Davis Master of Advanced Study in Maternal and Child Nutrition Program goes beyond graduate-level training in the field of nutrition; students are also prepared to become leaders in the nutrition field. Prospective students can register to attend a free online information session on October 2.

“Our program is unlike any other in the country,” said program director Jane Heinig, Ph.D., IBCLC, “We prepare our students not only to become nutrition experts, but also to administer nutrition programs on local and national levels. Our students are looking for an in-depth understanding of maternal and child nutrition, and this program meets that need by being more applied and public-health oriented than others.”

Program alumni will qualify for positions as pediatric and maternal nutrition specialists and lactation specialists within healthcare organizations, as well as administrative positions in public health agencies. Students also have the option to complete clinical internship hours and become International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC).

The program is geared to accommodate working professionals. Students have access to web-based resources, classes are held in the evening, and students have the option to participate in lectures in real time via a remote classroom. Heinig said many students choose to maintain full-time jobs while enrolled.

Applications are currently being accepted for fall 2020. The priority deadline is February 15, 2020, the general deadline is April 15, 2020 and students will be admitted as space is available through June 1, 2020.

This unique program is offered by the UC Davis Department of Nutrition, in collaboration with UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education. To learn more about the program, visit our website and register to attend a free online information session on October 2.
