Essentials of Land Use Planning

Online

From possessing the interdisciplinary knowledge required of the field to staying on top of evolving regulations and policies, the role of a land use planner is challenging—especially for someone new to the job. In this course designed for new or early career local government planners, you’ll explore a range of topics and best practices essential to being a successful planner in California.

Through a combination of pre-recorded lectures, class discussions and hands-on activities, you will learn how to navigate the world of planning, particularly land use planning processes that involve the preparation of plans and the entitlement of specific development projects. By the end of this course, you will possess a clear, high-level understanding of how the land use planning system works, and how to perform your job more effectively within this system.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Manage a development project through the entitlement process.
  • Knowledgeably apply common terms and processes as you interact with more experienced planners, developers, active citizens, and elected officials during a typical planning process.

Skills You Will Gain:

  • Accurately communicate and apply the principals of land use planning.
