Overview of Environmental Statistics

Online

If your work involves using and interpreting data, but your college statistics course is a distant memory, this class is for you. Designed for those who need to use or understand statistics but have not recently taken a statistics course, this refresher provides an overview of basic statistics with applications relevant to environmental issues. Topics include:

  • Descriptive statistics
  • Basics of confidence intervals
  • Basics of hypothesis tests
  • Parametric versus non-parametric tests
  • Linear regression

The course will focus on understanding concepts, not on computations. R Commander, a free statistical software, will be used for the computations, and examples will be used to illustrate the methods described in the course. Hands-on activities will enhance your understanding and your ability to apply what you learn.

Section Notes

This is an online, remote learning course, which consists of content and curriculum that is taught with pre-recorded and real time lectures, in addition to a real-time Q&A session with the instructors. Pre-recorded lectures and live sessions are accessed via our Canvas learning system and Zoom. Details regarding login information will be emailed out prior to the course start date.

This course will be available on Canvas from August 16-27, 2021. Three live Zoom meetings will be held during the course, date TBD. In the classroom environment, this course is equivalent to a three-day course.

We allow registration through the first morning of the course. It is expected that students review the prerecorded lectures before the live sessions in order to get the most value out of these meetings. We cannot extend course access beyond 11:59 PM on Friday 8/27, so students pursuing a late enrollment acknowledge that they will have less time to complete the materials. Please contact the course representative with any questions.

Enrollment Policies

Drop requests (withdraw with a refund) will be approved, less a $30 processing fee, if the request is received seven calendar days before the course begins. Click here to view complete enrollment policy information including details on withdrawals and transfers.
