Planning As If Water Mattered: An Integrated Approach to Managing Water Resources
Water has and always will play a crucial role in the success of western cities. Employing a comprehensive and integrated approach to managing this vital resource is essential to our future. In this course designed for urban planners, city managers, environmental consultants/planners and community activists, you will learn about the basic water policy issues and options facing communities in California and the arid west. Through online lecture and engaging, live Q&A sessions with your instructor and fellow classmates, you’ll become conversant in major water-related issues and case law, and will gain an in-depth understanding of the state-of-the-art, integrated approaches available to help sustainably manage water resources. By the end of this course, you will possess the understanding, strategies and tools to tackle water resource challenges and help your community grow in a resilient and responsible manner.

- Analyze and critique urban and ground water management plans and IRWM plans
- Demonstrate an understanding of water laws that would be applicable to a planning process
- Employ an integrated and collaborative approach to sustainably managing an entire water cycle
- Effectively evaluate projects and plans to ensure that critical water-related issues, constraints and limitations are being addressed
- Thoroughly critique water analyses as part of environmental (e.g., CEQA) and planning processes

This is an online, remote learning course, which consists of content and curriculum that is taught with pre-recorded and real time lectures, in addition to a real-time Q&A session with the instructor. Pre-recorded lectures and live sessions are accessed via our Canvas learning system and Zoom. Details regarding login information will be emailed out prior to the course start date.
