American Athletes Compete Against Nazism

Nazi ideology that centered on the supremacy of “Aryan” Germans was tested in the athletic arena when African Americans and Jewish Americans contested in the Berlin Olympic Games. It was also challenged in the boxing ring when German boxer Max Schmeling met Joe Louis, defeating Joe in the first bout. Using films and documentaries, the class will focus on the careers of Jesse Owens (the Usain Bolt of his day), Joe Louis and Max Schmeling.
