Much of American literature revolves around small towns and their effect on their citizens. In this class, a spin-off from the recent American Lit Re-lit course, Marcy and Germaine will examine four examples of that kind of literature: the play, Our Town by Thornton Wilder; two novels, Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson and Main Street by Sinclair Lewis; and the movie, The Last Picture Show. Each example shares similar themes, and each reveals profound truths about American society. With the exception of the movie, students will read the works outside of class and come prepared to discuss them. All titles are widely available in libraries, bookstores and online. Participants are urged to bring a copy of Our Town to the first day of class.
