In 1996, The Nikki Hospice Foundation for Pets began advocating the concept of hospice-supported natural dying, modeled on the principles of human-hospice care as defined by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Animal hospice is now becoming one of the most sought-after and gentle ways for pet parents to help their beloved companion animals transition through the dying process while honoring the human-animal bond. Participants will learn about the history of animal hospice, what it is and isn’t, what resources are available to caregivers who choose this option for their pets at end of life and how to go about companioning your animal on its final journey—in the comfort of home and in the presence of family. Post-hospice care will also be discussed, including where to turn for appropriate pet-loss support; when to choose burial, cremation or other after-death options; and how to select personal and meaningful forms of memorialization. Class sessions are interactive and questions welcomed and encouraged.
