In winter we explored the problematic lives of important or interesting 20th-century artists. Their drama became an intricate part of their art. Continuing this concept of
art and personal lives, we will investigate and discuss the uniqueness of artists during the earlier impressionist and post-impressionist periods. Films will be shown
and topics discussed in the following order: the difficult social role for a female artist in Berthe Morisot (2012), the outsider (Toulouse-Lautrec) embracing a
cosmopolitan setting in Moulin Rouge (1952), the later years of an ultimately lucrative career in Renoir (2012), the competitiveness between lovers (Claudel and
Rodin) in Camille Claudel (1988) and the lifelong public rejection of an artist’s work in Edvard Munch (1974).
