The Book of Job

The Iliad, Oedipus the King, King Lear and Job. Job is right up there with the greatest pieces of literature in Western culture. But it is a very difficult book to interpret. We do not know the author(s). We do not know when it was written. The body of the book is in poetry, and a prose “folktale” frames the poetry. How do prose and poetry go together? It also seems that additions have been made to the original or “autograph.” Who added them and why? What does the book “mean?” We will address all these questions and others and may find it difficult to come up with answers.
