California Early 20th Century Block Prints: Works of William S. Rice

William S. Rice moved from his native Pennsylvania to Stockton, California, in 1900. A graphic artist, he worked as a sketch artist for newspapers after art school. Rice traveled extensively, sketching, painting and writing for publication. His block prints were widely exhibited in his lifetime. With the recent revival of interest in printmaking and the Arts and Crafts Movement, his work has been celebrated with exhibitions at the Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum, the Crocker Art Museum and the Pasadena Museum of California Art. Rice’s grandson, Carl Rice Treseder, frequented Rice’s Oakland home and studio as a boy, where he absorbed lessons in nature study and gained an appreciation for Monterey Bay and Yosemite National Park through his grandfather’s artwork and stories. Treseder will share a look at the life of William S. Rice and show examples of the artist’s work. Pomegranate Press of Portland recently published a book, William S. Rice: Art and Life, authored by Rice's granddaughter, Ellen Treseder Sexauer.
