Since the late-19th century in the United States capitalism is typically conflated with democracy and socialism with an alien force whose goal is to steal from the rich as part of an attempt to take over the world. This course is based on the premise that it would be helpful to understand the actual arguments for capitalism and socialism, and then to analyze the American system with a focus on these ideas.
