A Christmas Carol is one of Dickens’ most popular and best-loved novels. The first portion of the course will look at the novel as a literary and social reform text, considering its autobiographical, Romantic and Victorian aspects. The second portion of the course will consider A Christmas Carol as a dramatic text and a jumping off point for creations in other media. Our examination of adaptations will look at many forms including a musical, a drama and an animated feature. The adaptations’ many settings include Victorian England, depression-era America and outer space, and have been starring vehicles for actors including George C. Scott, Alastair Sim, Bill Murray, Henry Winkler, Michael Caine, the Muppets, Mickey Mouse, Mister Magoo, Fred Flintstone and many others. Suggested reading: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
