Explore the Civil Rights movement from 1948 to 1968 in words, photos and a lot of music. Arguably one of the most significant undertakings in history for striving for justice in America, the timing of the Civil Rights movement was concurrent with the revival of folk music. Using the chronology of the quest for equal rights in America, we’ll examine events that often inspired folk singers and their songs. We’ll also study how some songs became anthems for Civil Rights. Discussion will be highly interactive, encouraging input from participants on their thoughts and memories of those times. Throughout all four sessions, we’ll put into context the ongoing challenges to freedom and justice in America. No class on Nov. 22.
