Discuss the cathedrals of the north of England—York, Durham, Lincoln and Norwich—which are some of the best preserved in all of Europe, in contrast to those of the south, which represent superb examples of efforts to revitalize structures that had been neglected to a state where they were no longer recognizable for their intended purpose. We’ll look at the cathedrals of Rochester, Winchester and Salisbury, which, thanks to the dedication of many restorers, were brought back to a condition of their own emotional power. Additionally, we will also discuss the cathedral at Beverly Minister—a massive northern and very pristine structure—as a testimony to modern, extraordinary efforts, in a town of some 17,000, to maintain its original glory.
