Fun with Dick and Jane

When you learned to read, most likely you spent time in a world inhabited by Dick and Jane, Sally and Spot, and Puff. This course will take a loving look at the rise and fall of Dick and Jane. At its peak, 80 percent of American first graders in the 50s learned to read with Dick and Jane, but by the end of the 60s, they were gone. We will watch a documentary, Whatever Happened to Dick and Jane, and you youngsters (just kidding!) will have an opportunity to “Look and See” a large collection of vintage books containing Dick and Jane stories, including a “Think and Do” booklet, and some of the many parodies and adaptations that have emerged in the past 10 years.
