Gender Equality and Civilian Control in the U.S. Military

We will study a 2019 federal court decision, finding it unconstitutional to require men, but not women, to register for the military draft at age 18. If women were included in the military on the same basis as men, they would enjoy substantial economic and social benefits. We will discuss abandoning the current all-volunteer military in order to re-establish greater civilian and political control over the exercise of military force by the US around the world. Finally, we will consider the adoption of mandatory national service, either military or non-military, to help reduce the current economic equality gap, bringing job training to all young adults in our towns and cities.
