Geoscience and Global Politics

Over the course of human history, mineral, energy and water resources have served as a trigger and a pretext for conflict between nations. In fact, it can be argued that the control of natural resources was the “glue” that held many empires—including the Roman, Egyptian, Incan and Chinese empires—together. Over the past two centuries, the importance of natural resources has become even stronger; both world wars and many other conflicts can be viewed as disputes over various natural resources. In addition, oil and gas supplies have provided a backdrop for the war in Ukraine, and the response of the United States and the European Union has been largely shaped by consideration of these energy resources. NOTE: This is a hybrid course and will be offered simultaneously online via Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent in advance of the first session to all students.
