German Language Cinema: Part II

This course continues an exploration of contemporary German language film, all but one of which is from the second decade of the 21st century. Selections
include four dramas and one comedy. Hannah Arendt is a biopic of the controversial writer who coined the term “the banality of evil.” When We Leave illustrates
a Turkish-German woman’s struggle with her family’s culture and tradition to gain independence and self-determination. Vision is a biopic of Hildegard von Bingen, the 12th-century Benedictine nun, mystic and polymath. The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum is a thriller based on the eponymous novel by Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Böll and has contemporary resonance. Look Who’s Back is a comedy from the bestselling satirical novel about Adolf Hitler.
