Our very own DeYoung docent will guide us through a travelling exhibition of The Maori Portraits: Gottfried Lindauer’s New Zealand. Lindauer emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 after training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He travelled extensively around New Zealand and developed a substantial trade as a portrait painter of prominent Maori and Pakeha individuals. His work pays tribute to the indigenous people of the land at a time when colonial settlement was forging cross-cultural interactions for an emerging New Zealand. The tour will be followed by a hosted luncheon at a waterfront restaurant on the drive home.
