Hugh Masekela's Musical Journey: From Sophiatown to the Mondavi Center

Hugh Masekela is a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer and singer. His musical career started when as a young boy attending a missionary school in Sophiatown (South Africa), he received a trumpet as a gift from Louis Armstrong. In this course we will trace Hugh Masekela’s musical journey in Apartheid South Africa (1950-1961), his life as a South African exile in New York City, his raucous adventures in the music culture of 1960s-1970s America, his tireless efforts to publicize the plight of black South Africans during the Apartheid era, and his triumphant return to South Africa in 1990 after the release of Nelson Mandela. Class participants will have an opportunity to listen to and watch rare music/video clips of Hugh Masekela from 1955-2013.
