This course will be an account of wilderness canoeing, a summer-long canoe trip in the sub-arctic of Canada. It will take us north of Yellowknife to Great Bear Lake, across that enormous lake, then up a series of waterways to the Coppermine River, which we’ll follow to the Northern Ocean. We will experience the boreal forest, frozen and open waters, and the tundra of the barren lands. By recounting a few of the experiences of early explorers, we will also journey through time. These accounts, accompanied by slides, should convey something of this remote region and a flavor of wilderness travel.
