The history of the British Empire is far too large to cover in four sessions. We’ll pick and choose from some prominent moments, allowing questions by class participants to guide our discussions. We’ll begin with the subject of the Caribbean: sugar, slavery and its impact on the American colonies and the British Empire, too. We’ll also consider South Africa and the struggle of the Boers/Afrikaners—the various native peoples and the British—as well as the push to evangelize and explore. Next, we will examine the matter of India, the “Jewel in the Crown.” Provided there is time, let’s not forget the Empire and its record in the Middle East.
