Visit the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in the tiny community of Gold Flat, near Nevada City, Calif., which operated from 1876 to the early 1940s. The museum is dedicated to the preservation of local transportation history and artifacts of the narrow-gauge era. We’ll enjoy a docent-led tour of the museum, rail yard and restoration shop. The main gallery houses Number 5, an 1875 Baldwin engine that began service hauling lumber and resources, then passengers and freight. Number 5 moved to Hollywood to star in movies and the television show, The Virginian. The rail yard houses a collection of wooden rail cars in various stages of restoration. The restoration shop is where old treasures find new life. There will be a 30-minute rail excursion in a restored motorized rail car. Lunch will be included.
