New Lessons for California from Hurricane Ian

Ian was a hurricane; the next major disaster in California will presumably be an earthquake (the Big One). These are very different natural events, but the lessons provided after Ian made landfall yield insights that are relevant to the Big One in California. We will examine the physical, political, economic, social, psychological and other impacts of Hurricane Ian and discuss what lessons from these impacts might be relevant in preparing for the next big earthquake in California, as well as other natural disasters (wildfires, floods, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, etc.). We will also look at earlier hurricanes to understand the extent to which lessons from them have (and have not) been applied to California.
