NextGenBio is a continuing education course for high school educators involved in regional biotechnology workforce and STEM education. The course prepares educators to support student learning at the intersection of biotechnology, sustainability, generative artificial intelligence, and precision/rapid manufacturing. Participants will engage in hands-on laboratory and design activities that model how microbial systems can be used to convert agricultural waste into value-added biodegradable materials, with a particular focus on polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bioplastics. The course combines preparatory workshops with an immersive summer practicum. Educators will build familiarity with safe introductory wet-lab practices, microbial culture, PHA production and testing, generative AI-supported scientific and engineering design, CAD, rapid prototyping, and life cycle/systems thinking. A central goal is to help educators translate these experiences back into their own classrooms and communities through curriculum adaptation, student mentorship, and regional career pathway awareness.
