O'Neill: From Experimental Beginnings to Grand Finale

In this class, we'll take a brief look at America’s only Nobel-Prize-winning dramatist, from two early expressionistic one-act plays (The Emperor Jones and The Hairy Ape) to his late, biographical masterpiece Long Day’s Journey into Night. We will look at how Eugene O'Neill changed American drama. O’Neill lived in California from 1937 to 1944; a trip to his home, Tao House, is scheduled for the spring. Note: Any collection of O'Neill plays should have Emperor Jones and The Hairy Ape; Yale University Press is the only source of Long Day’s Journey—there are two editions but the differences are not significant.
