Overview of Fluvial Geomorphology

This course provides an overview of fluvial geomorphology by introducing the key concepts of the discipline and teaching how flowing water and sediment interact to shape the landscape and sustain diverse ecosystems. Participants will gain an understanding of regional differences in fluvial systems and historic changes that have occurred that have disrupted the balance of fluvial processes and led to river degradation.

Topics include:
•    Fluvial morphology and interaction with other disciplines
•    Principles of stream hydrology and sediment transport
•    Fluvial system responses to historic and ongoing land use disturbances
•    Field-based geomorphic assessments
•    Application of fluvial knowledge to predict future change and develop strategies to restore stream environments

You will learn how geomorphologists work in a multi-disciplinary field and apply their knowledge of physical processes to solve real world problems as presented in case studies. This introductory course will provide a foundation for participants to further explore fluvial geomorphology topics that can be applied in their own work.
