This class features a representative selection of Native American warriors, statesmen, shamans and chieftains who rose to save their people and traditional homelands from the continuing encroachment of European conquerors, colonial settlers and self-serving politicians. Discuss leaders from many tribes and Indian nations over a period of 250 years. The facts of their lives (as far as they can be known), as well as the legends that have grown up about them will be reviewed. The patriots include: Hiawatha, King Philip, Popé, Pontiac, Tecumseh, Osceola, Black Hawk, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Geronimo and Chief Joseph. The class will also discuss Plymouth Colony friends Squanto, Massasoit and Samoset. Famous women Pocahontas and Sacajawea will be included. No class on Nov. 12.
