What are the most important cases the Supreme Court has decided during its past term? What were the legal bases for these decisions? To what extent were the decisions influenced by political and personal considerations? In this course we will discuss important cases from last term, including Obergefell v. Hodges (same-sex marriage), King v. Burwell (Obamacare) and Walker v. Texas Div., Sons of Confederate Veterans (specialty license plates with Confederate flag). The instructor will explain the legal reasoning of the cases in terms approachable to nonlawyers. We will also discuss how the Supreme Court functions as an institution, and how its members are influenced by society around them. Finally, we will briefly examine cases the Supreme Court will decide in the current term.
