The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is located in Berkeley, Calif. The original building, situated in the East Bay hills overlooking San Francisco Bay, was completed in 1942. Today, the expanded building houses the ALS, a third-generation synchrotron and national-user facility that attracts scientists from around the world. Electron bunches traveling at nearly the speed of light, when forced into a circular path by magnets, emit bright ultraviolet and X-ray light that shines down beamlines to experiment end-stations. The visit will include an informative tour, and we will highlight one of the beamlines and its use to determine the structures of molecules using the bright X-ray light.
