Session 1 – The Path to Medical School*
Are you considering a career in medicine? Let us help you put the pieces together.
The road to becoming a medical doctor is long and demanding, filled with the incredible responsibility of caring for others. While the pathway can seem complex, having the right guidance and support can make all the difference.
In Pre-Med Session 1, you’ll learn about the academic requirements, essential experiences, and practical steps needed to prepare for medical school. The earlier you understand the ins and outs of the journey, the better equipped you’ll be when you enter college.
Designed for high school students interested in medical school, medical research or health-related careers, this program provides a comprehensive introduction to the pre-med pathway, especially for students who aren’t sure if the medical field is for them. You’ll explore the logistics of planning for a career in medicine, build foundational skills for success, and reflect on your motivations for pursuing this field.
Students are expected to be prepared to engage actively and demonstrate maturity and responsibility. Throughout the program, you’ll work with a partner on a research topic of your choice and present your findings at a Closing Ceremony for faculty and families. You’ll also gain hands-on experience beyond the classroom—suturing and casting with students currently working in the field, visiting the UC Davis School of Medicine and speaking with admissions representatives about their experiences and advice.
By exploring multiple perspectives, participating in hands-on activities and completing a culminating research project, you’ll leave the program with greater clarity, confidence and direction as you begin your pre-medical journey.
*Please note that participating in this program does not guarantee admission to med school.
