This is a 1.0 CEU option for registered participants of the UC Davis Math Project Institute.
During this institute for secondary math teachers, participants will explore a variety of “hot topics” in mathematics instruction, including the use of mathematical tasks for both instruction and assessment, ideas for engaging students in rich academic discourse and problem solving, and strategies that support student learning and engagement. Using the standards for mathematical practice and the latest research, we will investigate instructional strategies and resources available to infuse your mathematics instruction with ideas, activities and strategies that will inspire both teachers and students. Participants will critically examine their current instructional materials as they identify areas where their students are struggling and embed and/or design additional lesson ideas and strategies that could be used to enhance students’ learning opportunities.
Participants will work individually, in small groups and as a whole class to:
- Experience activities and tasks designed to provide opportunities for students to make sense of and understand the math they are learning
- Refine questioning strategies and explore research-proven methods to scaffold student thinking, reasoning and understanding
- Explore strategies designed to support students’ mathematical thinking and reasoning
- Deepen your own mathematical thinking and reasoning as we explore math with a mathematician each day
- Discuss ways to use your current adoption in new ways that will increase student engagement and achievement
