USPAS Advanced Topics in Accelerator Physics

The purpose of this course is to focus on advanced topics in accelerator physics and its associated technology. 

Overall Course Objectives:   

  • Students will select two concentrations from the list below in this course. 

  • Students will be able to summarize the basic principles involved in the production of neutrino beams from accelerators. 

  • Students will be able to explain the principles of particle beam optics. 

  • Students will be able to discuss the fundamental concepts of VUV and x-ray FELs. 

  • Students will be able to summarize the principles of the main components in superconducting linear accelerators. 

  • Students will be able to describe the basic requirements for successful high-power target design and operation. 

  • Students will be able to explain the fundamental concepts for designing ring injection and extraction systems. 

  • Students will be able to discuss the theoretical topics of magnetics as applicable to the design of magnet systems for application to charged particle accelerators. 

  • Students will be able to restate the basic workings of ion sources.
