Why did four of the first five U.S. presidents come from Virginia? How did Virginians come to dominate early national politics? How did the Constitutional Convention negotiations around the electoral college and compromises on slavery affect the future course of U.S. government, especially the presidency? What were the hallmarks of the presidencies of Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe? Through lecture and plenty of discussion, we’ll examine these questions.
