Volcanoes connect Earth’s interior with the external surface on which we live. They are beautiful and inspire admiration and art. They are dangerous and arouse fear, sometimes even worship. Volcanoes attract visitors and residents and may kill them in gruesome ways. Every volcano is different—in its size, its energy, its chemistry and its potential hazard. We will survey the volcanoes of the world in all their variety. The images are wonderful and the stories are compelling.
