The three-tier system is a regulatory scheme designed to promote temperance and prevent vertical integration in the beer market. Many of the laws are antiquated and not designed for the current state of the market. Tied-house laws exist to discourage manufacturers, distributors and retailers from having undue influence over one another. These laws cover everything from business dealings to advertising restrictions. Finally, Croxall will discuss trademarks in the craft beer world—a crowded market that places pressure on naming and brands.
