Wine grapes are especially sensitive to the soil in which they are grown and the climatic conditions under which they ripen. Because of its complex geologic history, many different types of rocks are present in the Napa Valley and these rocks weather into an even broader range of soil types. In addition, the unique topography of the greater Bay Area produces large changes in climate over short distances. Explore how all of these factors come together to create a greater diversity of high-quality wines in the Napa Valley than in any other wine-growing region of comparable size.
