World War II After 70 Years: Causes and Strategies

World War II still fascinates, and debates persist about its causes and strategies. This course will be organized as a series of lectures and discussions of the following topics: Did Hitler plan World War II? Did appeasement lead to war? Why did France fall? Why did the Allies win? Why was Auschwitz never bombed? Why was Hiroshima bombed? Weekly reading assignments from the Internet will be distributed at the first class meeting.

Suggested reading prior to first session: World War II: A Very Short Introduction, Gerhard L. Weinberg (Oxford University Press, 2014) and “The World Through Hitler’s Eyes,” available online (registrants for this class will be emailed this link prior to the first class).
