Written on Subway Walls: Early Music of Simon and Garfunkel

In 1965 Simon and Garfunkel’s song, “The Sound of Silence,” hit number one on the Billboard chart. Although they had been singing together for years, that song set them on a course of unprecedented success and creativity. Paul Simon, who had studied English at Queens College, was a musician with an exceptional grasp of classic poetry. His poetic style arguably stands above all the music heroes of the sixties. When you add the beautiful harmony they produced, it is easy to see why they were such hit-makers. The six albums they produced in six years were filled with classic music. This course will examine songs from that early period. This is an interactive class with participation encouraged.
