Women in the Bible

Read the Bible as literature, much as one might read Homer, while exploring how women shape the biblical narrative. Through close readings of figures such as Eve, Miriam, Deborah, Bathsheba, Wisdom and Mary Magdalene, the course examines why women occupy such central roles in the Old Testament yet appear far less prominently in the New Testament. No advance reading is required; all texts will be explored in detail during class.

Suggested Reading: Biblical texts are widely available online. An easy way to locate passages is to search by character name—for example, “Miriam in the Bible.”
