Many people can only empathize with a traumatic experience from the outside—by watching someone they know go through it. But Adejia Boutte, Jr., knows firsthand the impact it can have —and the healing power of a physician.

“Through various difficult life circumstances, including the loss of a parent and a debilitating car accident, I observed how impactful both mental and physical healing was in my own journey,” said Adejia. “I became truly motivated to serve and lead others as a physician.”

Looking to strengthen his med school application, Adejia applied to the UC Davis Health Professions Post-Baccalaureate Program

“I chose UC Davis because I felt the staff was approachable and engaging—I found more support than I anticipated,” he said. “I improved my grades and gained invaluable experience in research to maximize my chances of successfully matriculating to medical school.”

Since completing the post-bac, Adejia has received numerous acceptances. He plans to attend the University of California, San Francisco, in the fall.

What were your goals when starting the program, and how did UC Davis help you work toward them?

I wanted to attend medical school and more specifically in California. UC Davis’ Health Professions Post-Bac gave me the framework and roadmap to successfully achieve all my goals.

What aspects of the program did you find most valuable?

I loved how comfortable I felt getting my questions answered. The feedback was extremely tailored and efficient for achieving my personal goals. Bryelle was an invaluable asset from beginning to end.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced on your journey, and how did you overcome them?

I think most people can relate to being overwhelmed by the bigger picture. I learned how to continually bring my focus to the present and take obstacles as they come. With grit and persistence, I was able to realize my goals.

How did the program support you during your med school application process?

The program was accessible. I had all the support and resources I needed. The secret was taking action on my end.

How did you benefit from academic advising and test prep resources?

Academic advising ensured my coursework aligned with any gaps in my transcript and helped reduce unnecessary worry or guesswork. I didn’t stress about retaking certain coursework because I was reassured my previous work would suffice.

Which track did you choose, and how did that focus enhance your preparation for your intended profession?

I chose the research track. It helped me understand how to interpret and evaluate the nuances of scientific research and more clearly identify where my passions and curiosities lie within the field.
