Bill Mead, M.Ed., started building websites in the mid-1990s…way back when the internet was just beginning to dip its toe into everyday life. “I saw the web—and web design—as an amazing field with lots of opportunity for expression, even in the very early years,” he said. 

Student Spotlight: Susan Boyland

As an accomplished systems engineer for Boeing, Susan Boyland hadn’t planned on switching careers. But a work assignment involving creating a website for her team changed all of that. She discovered a talent and interest in website development and decided to take her self-taught skills to the next level. Boyland enrolled in the online Web Development Certificate Program and completed the coursework while juggling a busy professional and personal life.

Meet Zeena Bhakta—she’s an analyst at the federal government in Washington, D.C. and a new graduate of the Web Development Certificate Program at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education. While coding and web development are not part of her day job, Bhakta says she has always been interested in web development and wanted to prepare herself in the event her job may require these skills in the future. “With society’s increased dependence on technology such as web applications, I recognize there is a strong potential for a nexus between any job and the web/IT industry,” said Bhakta.

After a successful career as a pharmaceutical salesperson and eight years as a stay-at-home mom, Anne Worthington is now the alumni and student giving officer for the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School. She’s also a student in the Fundraising and Development Professional Concentration at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education. When re-entering the workforce, Worthington felt her sales skills made her a great fit for the field of development.

Student Spotlight: Richard Krumwiede

As a landscape architect, Richard Krumwiede, now winemaker/viticulturist at Sycamore Ranch Vineyard & Winery, always enjoyed visiting the grounds of the many wineries he worked on. In 2007, he decided to plant a zinfandel vineyard on his own property after a beetle infestation killed off the native pines. As the vineyard developed, he began making wine, further cultivating his interest in viticulture and winemaking.

Michael Ramsey has made a career out of his passion for making wine and beer, despite growing up in a family that practiced temperance. He is the teaching laboratory manager for the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology and an instructor in UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education’s brewing and winemaking programs. He teaches the Wine Microbiology Workshop and Introduction to Wine Chemistry.

Chik Brenneman is the winemaker for the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology and manager of the teaching winery and department wine cellar, where he procures wines and oversees the collections. With more than 25 years in the industry, Brenneman has been teaching Wine Filtration and Step-by-Step Winemaking for UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education for 10 years.

Instructor Spotlight: Kaan Kurtural

As an associate Cooperative Extension specialist in viticulture with the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology, Kaan Kurtural is well versed in helping grape growers solve real-world production issues. “It is very satisfying to see the results of hard work,” said Kurtural, who grew up on a raisin ranch and whose research focuses on understanding whole grapevine physiology in order to improve agricultural practices and adapt to ecological stresses. Kurtural is the instructor of Establishing and Managing a Small Vineyard.
