Are You a City Mouse or a Country Mouse?

The differences in city living and country living were as interesting an issue 100 years ago as they are in today’s political landscape. As we await the counts in the national election, it’s instructive to take a look back at national history to examine the tensions and debates that arose as many Americans migrated from agrarian life to urban life.

American History Through Its Urban Spaces

Nov. 13 & 20, 2020: Friday, 2-4 p.m.

Starting Friday, November 13, Professor Claire Goldstene will be featured in a live Zoom class analyzing the movement of the American public into and out of cities. We’ll look at notable debates over the rights of individuals versus the interests of society at large, and consider how people thought about what constituted urban problems and how to solve them. Discussion will also include a look at the relationship of cities and their suburbs.

Claire Goldstene has taught U.S. history at American University, the University of North Florida and the University of Maryland. She is the author of The Struggle for America’s Promise: Equal Opportunity at the Dawn of Corporate Capital.
