Area 3 Writing Project: The Writing Puzzle: Fitting the Pieces Together (Grades 3-8)

This workshop is designed to help teachers organize their writing program. Participants will walk away with a comprehensive sample of a Writer's Notebook and how to use it for instruction, an instruction to the 6+1 Traits of Writing, mini-lesson ideas, and ways to set-up and manage Writer's Workshop.

  • Writer's Notebook: Students learn how to use the two-sided notebook for drafting and note-taking.  Students incorporate a 'doing' and 'teaching' side as a way to keep track of writing and instruction
  • 6 Traits of Writing: Ideas and content, organization, voice, work choice, sentence fluency, conventions and lessons to support each in all text types
  • Writer's Workshop: How to set up a writer's workshop for success--launching the workshop, mini-lessons, drafting, responding, revising, editing and publishing.
  • Mini-lessons that support student growth and learning
