California Wildfires: Strategies for Planning and Mitigation

Fire season in California has expanded to become a year-round issue. With the increasing strength and frequency of fires in California, it is critical that we address some contributing factors and develop strategies to mitigate their future occurrence. What is the role of local government, and how should cities and counties coordinate with their partners? How do local mitigation plans connect with wildfire prevention and community preparedness, and how should they be modified to better prevent disaster? What are the roles of the State and FEMA? Both rural and urban communities are threatened as stronger wildfires encroach beyond the Wildland Urban Interface into increasingly developed areas. We’ll explore all of this and discuss how communities can develop specific ‘next steps’ for prevention and preparation.
