Return to Gold Mountain: Historic Tour and Teacher Workshop

The Return to Gold Mountain Historic Tour and Teacher Workshop is a professional learning opportunity that takes teachers into the High Sierra to see iconic sites of the Chinese Railroad Workers who built the first Transcontinental Railroad. 2019 marks the 150th Anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, an opportune moment for this tour. The tour takes participants from Sacramento to four sites where we can still see how Chinese workers surmounted great geographical challenges with feats of great engineering to build the line. The teacher workshop will provide background readings, scholar talks, a panel discussion turning the site into a historical monument, engaging activities to examine primary and secondary sources, and an opportunity to share and get feedback on lesson ideas.
