Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve Geology Hike

Join us on a 1.5-mile round-trip hike (300’ elevation gain) at Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve, located a few miles west of Winters, to learn more about the geology of this area. We’ll stop at several interpretive sites along the way to consider questions like: How did the coastal mountains form? How did Putah Creek cut through a 2,500’-high mountain wall (that itself consists of deep-sea sediments)? How do springs keep flowing during a drought and how does Monticello Dam affect downstream tributaries?
Note: Participants must provide their own transportation to Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve. A map will be sent before class. Participants must be prepared to walk unassisted on steep, rough uneven ground. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes, and bring either sun/rain protection, water and snacks. Limited enrollment. No pets.
