Building More Than Projects
“Lifelong learning has been a cornerstone of my career,” said Camilo Renteria. As a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he transitioned from military service to agriculture and then construction, relying on continuing education and professional development to help him upskill.
“It’s essential for professionals to adapt to industry changes, but it’s also about setting an example for others that investing in yourself creates opportunities for growth and excellence.”
In 2024, Camilo enrolled in the Construction Management Certificate Program at UC Davis CPE.
“I wanted to expand my skill set to deliver high-quality projects while ensuring I stay ahead in a competitive industry,” he said. “It pushed me outside my comfort zone with late-night study sessions and some tough topics, but it was 100% worth it.”
This year, he launched Bravo Companies, a disabled veteran- and minority-owned construction business.
“The certificate program aligned perfectly with my aspirations to scale my business and make a meaningful impact in the industry by delivering innovative, efficient construction solutions,” Camilo said.
Now, he says he has the tools not just to do better work but also to build opportunities for others in the industry.
Mastering the Trade

Camilo credits the convenience of the online program with allowing him to achieve his goals.
“The program’s flexibility was crucial,” he said. “As a business owner, full-time professional and father, it allowed me to study on my own time, making it possible to keep up with my responsibilities without compromising on family or work commitments.”
He also appreciated the real-world insights instructors provided, which he was able to apply to his own work, and the connections he made in the program.
“Networking with peers gave me fresh perspectives and connections in the industry,” Camilo said.
Camilo’s investment in the program has paid off.
“It enhanced my confidence in managing complex projects and taught me how to approach challenges with structure and strategy,” he said. “I gained invaluable skills in project scheduling, budgeting and risk management. It also reinforced the importance of clear communication and collaboration, which are vital for successful project execution.”
His long-term goal is to apply the knowledge he gained to elevate Bravo Companies.
“By improving project planning and delivery, I can ensure Bravo Companies becomes a trusted partner in the construction industry,” he said. “This includes refining financial strategies, streamlining processes and improving communication with clients and subcontractors.”
Camilo plans to focus his efforts on commercial tenant improvements and healthcare projects by integrating prefabricated solutions to enhance efficiency and design.

As president of the Indiana Chapter of the Construction Industry Education Foundation and vice president of Corporate Partnerships for the Association of Latino Professionals for America, Camilo is using the skills he gained to make an impact beyond his work. He helps high school students explore career options in architecture, construction and trades, and he connects college students with industry leaders who can help build their professional networks and secure jobs.
